Easy win for Donaghmore/Ashbourne

The first SFC game to be played at Stamullen in over two decades brought a comfortable victory for Donaghmore/Ashbourne over Duleek/Bellewstown.

It was a proud evening for the St Patrick’s club as they showed off their superb new facilities and Donaghmore/Ashbourne marked the occasion with a less than polished performance which was still good enough to yield an eight-point win. They lacked a finishing touch as they played some good football in the early stages, but still managed to push into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to points from John Broderick (two), Paul Galligan and Ciaran Beirne.

However, they appeared to ease off after that and Duleek/Bellewstown rallied with points from John Flood (two), Peter Curran and Darren Mills to get back to level terms. The winners responded by scoring the next four points courtesy of  Cormac McGill (two), Andrew Tormey and Broderick, before Flood split the uprights at the other end to leave his side adrift by 0-5 to 0-8 at the interval.

Stephen Nolan and Darren Mills added points for Duleek/Bellewstown in the first four minutes of the second half, but they failed to score again and missed a goal chance when Mills was unable to finish.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne didn’t have to set the world alight to assume control and three points from Tormey and one each by McGill, Broderick, Galligan and Eoin Reilly eased them to a comprehensive win.
